BEING KIND AND USEFUL

  • We live in demanding times.

  • People of all ages around the world are facing many challenges.

  • When we help others we find comfort and worry less about our own challenges.

The American philosopher, Ralph Waldo Emerson stated, “The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.”

‘”Be kind and be useful’ are two lessons that Barack Obama, the former USA President, shared with his daughters.

He stated that if you are kind and you are useful, people will appreciate working with you. You will feel good about yourself.

He sees these qualities in young leaders today as they work to solve the many problems they face.

HOW TO HELP:

We can promote discussion and encourage our youth by asking the following questions.

  • What you can do in your personal life to become kind and useful?

  • What skills do you have that can help others?

  • Is there something about which you are passionate that you immerse yourself in, be involved with, or sign up for?

  • How can you become more confident and offer to help others?

  • Are there any current problems that you can help people solve?

  • Can you suggest how to avoid today’s problems from happening in the future?

  • People remember those who cheerfully helped them. How can you practice giving help freely?

  • What knowledge and skills can you gain by helping others?

  • How might we assist people in learning how to solve problems so they can prevent them from reoccurring?

  • Stop and listen. How do you think listening carefully to others can help them?

  • Should you solve the issue for them or help them to solve their problem?

  • How can you help people feel better about the situation they are facing?

  • How do I know when it is time to stop helping others solve the problem they faced?

  • How can I be sensitive to people’s feelings about the issues they are facing?

  • How can I show what it means to be open and available to help others? Why is this helpful?

  • Why should I be reliable and follow through with my commitments to help others?
