A poem written over 90 years ago, “Desiderata,” has messages for all of us.
This poem can be shared with our young people.
It offers many discussion points about life.

In 1972 there was a hit on the radio titled “Desiderata.”

Desiderata is Latin for ‘desired things.’

I was living in Africa in the early 1970’s and I remember hearing it often on the radio.

This hit is based on a poem written over 90 years ago.

An American writer, Max Ehrmann wrote it in in 1927.

This poem contains many desirable thoughts about attitudes, relationships, and communications.

It urges one to:

Be on good terms with everyone as far as possible.
Listen to others, as they too have their stories.
Avoid loud and aggressive people.
Do not compare yourself to others.
Enjoy your achievements and your plans.
Realize life is full of heroism.
Exercise caution, but strive for high ideals.
Be yourself.
Age gracefully.
Be strong in face of challenges.
Be kind to yourself.
Note that the universe is unfolding as it should.
Realize in spite of its complications, it is a beautiful world.
Be cheerful and strive to be happy.

This 90-year-old poem contains many universal messages.

Many of these messages we can share with young people.
