WHAT MOTIVATES US?

  • Why are some youth motivated to attend group coaching?

  • What makes some individuals more self-motivated and ambitious than others?

  • Why are some people more reliable and get things done?

When we work with groups of youth, we notice that some participants are more motivated to participate than others.

People with the same background and experiences often do not react to situations in the same way.

DEFINITION OF MOTIVATION & AMBITION?

Motivation is defined as, “Enthusiasm for doing something.”

An example is “He’s not only a bright student but always shows a great deal of motivation towards his studies.

Ambition is defined as, “A strong wish to achieve something.”

An example is, “Her ambition is to run her own business.”

WHAT CAUSES AMBITION?

GENETICS:

  • People are born with diverse aptitudes.

  • Look at different members of the same family.

  • You will often find large differences in ambition amongst siblings.

BIRTH ORDER:

  • Younger and older children can compete with each other.

  • An example is when younger siblings become competitive with their older siblings.

EGO DRIVEN & BRAVERY:

  • A big ego combined with bravery often leads to being ambitious.

  • Such people believe they deserve a better life.

  • Bravery enables them to pursue that goal.

  • This could result in extreme ambition.

INSECURITY:

When insecure they can either:

  • withdraw and opt out, or

  • take positive action that can change their life as to where they can even become ambitious.,

PROVE OTHERS WRONG:

Rejection or humiliation by others can motivate a person to prove others wrong.

TOUGH COMPETITION:

In situations where a person has to compete with peers, they may become very ambitious.

SELF-CONFIDENCE:

  • When self-confident, they believe they can reach their goals.

  • They will likely show ambition.

WORTHINESS:

When one desires to prove that they are worthy they can become ambitious.

SENSE OF PURPOSE:

When a person has a meaningful purpose, there is a strong motivation to persist.

POSITIVE/NEGATIVE:

As with most things in life there are good and bad aspects.

POSITIVE:

  • Efforts can lead toward hard work and success.

  • This can have a positive impact on a person and others around them.

NEGATIVE:

  • Over emphasis on items like external wealth, etc. can cause lack of fulfillment.

  • This can have a negative impact on a person and others around them.

  1. There are so many factors which affect individual levels of motivation, but motivation is not the singular factor in most instances. Initiation plays a large part in the success or lack of success in reaching ones full potential; Particularly when a person is insecure, has low self-confidence or lack of experience achieving goals independently.
I find the reasons for a lack in motivation easier to identify than ways to encourage initiation.
An example is going to the gym. It is easy to identify the reasons which affect motivation in going to the gym or attending a physical event. Once a person is at the gym or beginning a new physical activity they are most likely to complete the activity. Encouraging the person to attend or begin the task is where I fall short of ideas to promote. The follow-thru factor in motivation is easier to address than the motivation to initiate activities, projects or achievement of goals. Any further ideas to promote initiation?
