-
Often it is a challenge to return to an activity after we have stopped it for a period of time.
-
It is gratifying to hear why youth have returned to group sessions after a break.
-
It confirms that group sessions are benefiting our youth.
Returning to some of our normal routines after a summer break can be a challenge.
Last week, one of the youth groups had its first meeting after the summer break. It was wonderful to see familiar faces.
After a break, we get out of the habit of attending and practicing our communication skills.
At last week’s session, I asked them why they had returned.
Here are some of their comments.
REASONS FOR RETURNING:
-
“I am excited as I can practice and improve my communication skills.”
-
“We are involved with Model United Nations at our school. This will assist me to take part and speak better there.”
-
“These sessions have improved my self-confidence. I was shy and I am now able to speak in front of others with more ease.”
-
“I used to only watch the others, but now I am talking more and finding my voice.“
-
“It is fun. We do many activities. We have potlucks and organize contests as well.”
-
“I have friends here and they told me about the fun they are having, so I joined them.”
It was very encouraging to see many of them return and to hear their comments.
AN ADULT’S PERSPECTIVE:
Here are some thoughts on why the youth groups are effective.
-
Young people like to emulate adults. They pretend to do adult things like playing house, or doing an adult’s work.
-
We offer them the opportunity to “play adult.”
-
We allow them to organize and run the sessions.
-
They have the opportunity to brainstorm, discuss and speak on a variety of topics.
-
They enjoy performing the various roles available to them.
-
They learn more about each other and make new friends.
-
They enjoy the empowerment the group offers. This increases their self-confidence.
-
These sessions offer them opportunities to speak and be heard.
-
It offers the opportunity to interact and work with those of different ages and backgrounds.
It is wonderful to see them grow and improve their communication and leadership skills. This will assist them throughout their lives.
After a break, it is encouraging to see them return. I look forward to working with them once again.
