Here is a powerful exercise to introduce to our coaching participants.
They imagine, write and regularly review their future ‘dreams.’
This exercise has resulted in some amazing outcomes.
Here is an exercise that could impact our youth’s future in a positive manner:
This exercise is outlined in a podcast hosted by Tim Ferriss. He interviewed Debbie Millman who is a designer, writer, artist and educator. She described the exercise which she called, “Your Plan for a Remarkable Life.” She has implemented it with her students with some amazing results.
THE EXERCISE:
They start by sitting in a quiet spot for about an hour or so.
They imagine what their life would be like when they are adults.
They can do and be anything they want, without fear of failure.
Once they visualize their future life, they start writing.
They describe a day in their future life.
DETAILS OF THE EXERCISE:
Write what I visualize my life will be like when I grow up.
Describe a day in my life.
What does my life look like?
What am I doing?
Where am I living?
Who am I living with?
What friends do I have? What are those relationships like?
What pets do I have?
What kind of house do I live in? Is it an apartment?
Am I in a city or the country?
What my furniture looks like? (My bed, etc,)
What does my hair looks like?
What do my clothes look like?
What are the details about my pets, my family, or any children?
Do I have a car, a boat?
What is my career / work?
What do I want?
What am I reading?
What I am making?
What excites me?
What is my health is like?
Write about one day in the future when I am grown up. What does my entire day look like?
Start from the minute I wake up, brush my teeth, have my morning meal right through to when I go to bed at night.
What is that day like for me?
Dream big and without any fear.
Write as much detail as possible.
The more you put into this, the more success you will have.
INTRODUCE IT TO OUR YOUTH COACHING GROUPS:
This could be an excellent project for the first 4 weeks trial period of online coaching.
We need to encourage participants to review it about every six months. This is a living document. We can remind the participants to review it.
Although it isn’t necessary to share it with anyone, we could encourage them to do so. When we share our dreams with others, it has a positive effect.
The description of the exercise can be found around the 1 hour, 34 minute mark of the podcast.
Debbie states this is based on a similar exercise introduced to her by Milton Glasser who is a celebrated American graphic designer.
Introducing this exercise in our group coaching can have a powerful influence on the futures of our participants.
