CHORES BUILD SOUGHT AFTER PEOPLE:

  • Doing chores helps build character.

  • We gain a “can do” and team building attitude.

  • This attitude helps us have an enjoyable and successful life.

We want to have fun and enjoy what we are doing.

However doing boring and tedious chores can be useful.

The Cambridge Dictionary defines a chore as, “a job or piece of work that is often boring or unpleasant but needs to be done regularly.”

Why should we expose our young people to doing chores?

The answer is two words: Character Building.

Throughout life it is inevitable that there will be some unpleasant or boring tasks to do.

Employers seek individuals who take directions and have a “can do” attitude.

EFFECTS OF DOING CHORES:

  • Doing chores or boring tasks helps our young people to build character.

  • All tasks need to be done, even if they are not fun.

  • Completing chores helps to develop a positive attitude.

  • When they are part of a team, the unpleasant tasks need doing.

  • It all contributes to the better good of the group.

  • It builds a ‘let’s get it done‘ attitude.

  • Even a ‘dream job’ can have some boring tasks.

  • Employers seek to attract employees with a ‘can do’ and team spirit attitude.

  • This attitude is more valued than technical knowledge.

THE CREW EXAMPLE:

An example is the crew to which I belong.

In my teenage years, I was a member of the Boy Scouts.

There is a group of us who were in our Rover crew many decades ago.

We still get together a couple of times a year.

One of our members owns a 34 foot power boat. We enjoy going out for 3 to 5 day cruises a few times a year.

There are chores to do.

Sharing the chores and our time together continues to build our camaraderie and friendship.

These crew’s cruises are a highlight of the year for me.

We want to give our children an easy and fun childhood.

But having them do chores builds character.

This will help them have a fun and successful life no matter what tasks and work they ultimately do.

It builds character that will assist them as they journey through life.

Please share your ideas and thoughts about children doing chores. How will enable them to gain the communication and leadership skills required in the 21st Century?
