STORYTELLING -A Skill for All Ages.

  • Throughout our history, the human race has told stories.

  • Storytelling is a key component of communication.

  • It is a skill that we should all develop to better build a sense of community.

Storytelling is a key component of communication and connecting with each other.

STORYTELLING:

  • Humans are emotional beings.

  • Storytelling connects information to emotions.

  • It helps people relate to one another.

  • People get to know each other in a deeper manner.

  • Storytelling helps create community.

  • Storytelling is effective at teaching because people remember the details better. They can recall key points weeks later.

  • Using stories in presentations is much more effective than using standard PowerPoint.

HOW TO HELP OUR YOUTH:

  • Discuss the power of stories with youth.

  • Review and discuss examples of stories and how we remember them.

  • Review elements of storytelling as plots, characters, and narratives.

  • Discuss the audience’s role and the importance of adapting, relating and connecting with them.

  • Encourage them to tell stories.

  • Use string-a-long stories where one person starts and the rest of the participants continue adding a few sentences.

  • Have them practice regular impromptu speaking on a variety of topics.

  • Recognize that learning how to use stories will enable them to know each other in a deeper manner and build community.

  • Explain that each culture has its own stories.

  • Let them know that stories can entertain, educate, preserve culture and instill morals.

  • Advise them that learning how to use stories will enable them to know each other in a deeper manner and build community.

Storytelling is a valuable skill that assists all ages to connect.

We can encourage and assist the younger generation to learn about the power and benefits of good storytelling.
